It is a place for gathering, conversation and hospitality. Contemporary interpretations can respect that role without relying on excessive decoration.

Material, proportion, light and craftsmanship can establish a strong sense of identity in a quieter and more architectural way.

Wood is particularly effective because it introduces warmth and visual rhythm.

It can appear across wall panelling, doors, consoles, built-in elements or selected furniture. Deeper timber tones can create greater formality, while lighter expressions can support a more relaxed contemporary atmosphere.

The important decision is determining which material should lead the space.

A contemporary Majlis can express hospitality through material quality and proportion rather than ornament alone.

If wall panelling is visually dominant, surrounding stone, textiles and solid colours can remain quieter. If the architecture already contains expressive stone or patterned surfaces, the wood can provide balance rather than compete for attention.

A restrained palette also allows craftsmanship to become more visible. Junctions, panel proportions, grain direction and lighting details can contribute as much to the character of the room as colour itself.

Texture introduces variation without requiring additional colours.

A deeper wood structure can create shadow and tactility. Matt surfaces provide quieter areas within the composition. Fabric and stone add further contrast through their different physical characteristics.

Lighting should be developed alongside these materials.

Wall washing can emphasize vertical grain. Integrated lighting can highlight joinery details. Softer ambient illumination can make warm wood surfaces feel more inviting.

The Majlis should have its own identity without becoming visually disconnected from the rest of the residence.

Selected materials can continue into entrance areas, corridors, living spaces or other fitted elements in smaller proportions. The connection does not have to be literal. It simply needs to feel intentional.

This creates a recognizable material language across the home while preserving the importance of the Majlis itself.
